Divergent by Veronica Roth
About Divergent:
Imagine a world where, at the age of 16, you have to make a choice that will alter your life forever - stay with your family, living a life that you don't like and doing work that you aren't good at, or leave your family forever, to live a life that is perfect for you, doing work that makes you happy. This is the society that Beatrice lives in, and it isn't as perfect a society as she originally thought. This fast-paced, exciting, and often surprising, story was next to impossible to put down. The world that Veronica Roth creates is completely different from our own world, and yet has startling similarities. Divergent is suitable for young adults and contains mild use of violence, profanity, sexuality and mature content in the context of the story.
What do you think?
Beatrice struggles with selflessness throughout the story. When does she display selfishness? When does she display selflessness? In your own life, do you think you are more selfless or selfish? Why?
A lot of the new people that Beatrice, or Tris, meets seem to want to protect her, and their frienship with her revolves around this. But Tris doesn't want protection from them as she grows and develops. What do we "owe" people who help us through a situation
